Langue des durées.

French method of teaching rhythmic notation to beginners. It was introduced by Aimé Paris (1798–1866) as part of the Galin-Paris-Chevé method of teaching sight-singing. The method gives to notes and groups of notes names which, when spoken aloud, reproduce the rhythmic effects concerned (see illustration). The system was later adapted for English use by John Curwen (1816–80) and incorporated into the Tonic Sol-fa method under the name of ‘French time names’.
